It has been decided that the caverns of Diamond are to be flooded. With the aim of relieving the Oceanic pressure created by global warming. All citizens of Diamond will be transferred to quarters on earth’s moon. You have no choice in this matter, if you do not comply the earth’s ocean will breach the flood barriers protecting the Antarctic, and flood Diamond within a decade.

It has been decided that all workers from Diamond will be given new duty rota’s when they reach the moon. All those presently working at Moon base One will be transferred to Mars.

On the upside, at least someone has a plan…

    1. Michael Humphris

Sadly that plan leaves humanities at the beck and call of their AI masters.

  2. granonine

And after Mars, where? AI had better stay busy figuring out how humans are to sustain life out there in space 🙂

    1. Michael Humphris

How to proceed, now that’s the challenge this author faces. Thank you granonine

    2. Michael Humphris

Now that’s a question and a half. It will know don’t keep my muse busy over the festive period

  3. draliman

When the next lot get shipped to the moon and the moon-dwellers to Mars, I wonder where the current Mars-dwellers will go…

    1. Michael Humphris

Now that’s a question that my muse needs to consider

  4. Brenda's Thoughts

I’m not so sure I’d like not having a choice, the moon seems sort of hostile to human life. My son on the other hand would jump at the chance. Nice take on the prompt, Michael!

    1. Michael Humphris

Thank you Brenda, please let your son know that at the present time both the moon and Mars, are I believe quite hostile. In this story which is a very small part of a planned much larger story, a Third World War cost humanity self control.

      1. Brenda's Thoughts

Best wishes on your larger story! A good start…

        1. Michael Humphris

          Thank you Brenda

Nothing like consultation, is there And this is nothing like consultation. The Mars assignment sounds like the short straw, though.

    1. Michael Humphris

Thank you Sandra, this story is a brief clip from a much longer story that I have in mind. In this story humanity has lost control after a Third World War. A team of 500 artificial intelligent machines was given the role of guiding the future of humanity.

  6. Violet Lentz

Excellent write. Makes me want to jump up and say, “that’s no fair!”

    1. Michael Humphris

Glad you enjoyed this snippet from a much longer story that I have in mind… In this story humanity has lost control after a Third World War. A team of 500 artificial intelligent machines was given the role of guiding the future of humanity.

  7. Abhijit Ray

Good long term planning for relocation into different parts of the solar system.

    1. Michael Humphris

Thank you Abhijit, In this story humanity has lost control after a Third World War. A team of 500 artificial intelligent machines was given the role of guiding the future of humanity.

  8. ceayr

At least some sort of Intelligence is being applied to the problem, more than is happening today.

    1. Michael Humphris

That’s so true, in the longer version of this story, after humanity lost control resulting in a Third World War. A team of 500 artificial intelligent machines was given the role of guiding the future of humanity.

  9. Keith's Ramblings

I hope they don’t put me on Uranus!

    1. Michael Humphris

Ha…In this story humanity has lost control after a Third World War. A team of 500 artificial intelligent machines was given the role of guiding the future of humanity. They are looking at sending a team to develope Uranus.

  10. plaridel

one thing positive about global warming is making space exploration a reality. 🙂

    1. Michael Humphris

Thank you plaridel, In this story humanity has lost control after a Third World War. A team of 500 artificial intelligent machines has been given the role of guiding the future of humanity.

  11. lisarey1990

Very good write. I think this could happen in the future.

  12. JoHawkTheWriter

Yes Master AI. We will comply Master AI. (I think an alternate plan might be brewing)

    1. Michael Humphris

Thank you Jo, AI. Says no alternative plans allowed.

  13. jillyfunnell

A whole new perspective on compulsory purchase. What do they do for currency, I wonder. How are they to sustain in their new homes? PS Glad to see there are no jokes about not wanting to go to the moon because the place has no atmosphere.

    1. Michael Humphris

Thank you Jilly, currency is no longer, but an atmosphere ‘of sorts’ has been created on both the moon and Mars

  14. 4963andypop

Its funny how your AI writes in a very bureaucratic tone, much like a directive from a school district or puckic agency. No emotion, no compassion. This leaves us wondering about the fate of humanity.

    1. Michael Humphris

Sadly humanities fate was sealed when world war three started.

  15. magarisa

I suppose anyone in Diamond who doesn’t comply will just die in the flood? Or will they be killed by AI instead? Fascinating story.

    1. Michael Humphris

The AI’s are perhaps more devious, they need humans to undertaken the menial chores

  16. michaelwynnauthor

Very dictatorial, you feel for those with no choice or control over their onw lives

    1. Michael Humphris

Thank you Michael…No choice is so true,

  17. Alicia Jamtaas

A mighty shuffling around. And that’s what change does. Well done.

    1. Michael Humphris

Thank you Alicia. With flash fiction I often want to say more…In the future I see humanity moving through space, perhaps living in a Dyson sphere.
