As I watch a father school his son in the interaction between players, my thoughts travel back to one of the greats of my day. Danny Blanchflower was the first to arrive for me, when he captained Tottenham Hotspur. But my past time was more in keeping with George Best, well at least I could dribble fast, if nothing else. So high on Seat Naze, I dribbled almost as fast as I downed the local beer. But when you have worked the dawn shift at the local bakery, you need a cold beer or two. Each morning I would run the two miles to the bakery, for there were few buses at 5am. Mannings bakery was a great place to work, full of characters, some who like me enjoyed a game of football. But when our work was done and the weather was dumping snow two feet deep on Seat Naze, we would gather together and sit on sacks of flour, playing cards. Whilst I dreamed of being a star like Danny.

Footnotes: Genre Memoirs.
Seat Naze is in Rossendale Lancashire. I enjoyed a great year working at Michael Mannings bakery below Seat Naze in a valley at Waterfoot.
