We will See

We should remember that without your help humanity would not have made it to this century. You gave your all for us when the invaders came. Once again you accompanied us into war. You suffered greatly alongside us. You never complained although at times you must have been terrified.

Now we humans live underground without your companionship. We miss you and all who fought with us. I recall your sons and daughters. I have sketched your likeness in the dust of these mines so many times. That the young of my race, who see unlike me, have decided to construct a tribute to you.

Whether it has your spirit I cannot tell, but I feel your strength in my children’s creation. Soon I the last one of those who once lived on the surface will be gone. But we the people, who once lived on the surface, have left a record for our children’s children. That they may know a little that was the beauty of earth. We pray that one day they will see that beauty again.

Footnote: one hundred years since the end of the 1914-1918 war, the prompt photo, reminded me of the terrible suffering of horses during that war.

  1. Horse has contributed tremendously towards human transport, travel as well as in human wars. Yes these quiet and efficient animals suffered immensely during battles where they had neither any interest nor any stake.
