The Pain of School Days

My teacher said that I should write down my thoughts about what I had done and seen. I would have sooner written about a battleship or my dreams about driving steam trains and building dams, or even about meeting Dan Dare.

Then I saw the object yet did not understand it. There was colour and form isolated in a black void. Then somehow I knew, I was looking at a model, a blue print for a city of the future. A city that could only exist in space. The city of my dreams, ruled over by the Mekon. A cruel unforgiving place of utter control where human beings had been turned into slaves.

I felt and heard the blackboard duster hit my desk, as the teacher shouted at me to stop day dreaming and get back to writing a story about what I had done in the school holidays.

  1. Great story! I remember flying blackboard dusters made of wood, hard stuff that always met their mark. Would have been wonderful to have school holidays in that glass city.

  2. It seems a lot of us remember flying blackboard dusters, Michael. I’m glad that one only hit your desk! What an abrupt way to have your wonderful daydream stopped. A story set in your city of the future would have undoubtedly been far more colourful and creative than one about how you spent the school holidays. Teachers can be so dull sometimes.

    1. To be a teacher who knows how to channel dreams, that’s a real skill which gets all to often lost. To many schools put all their effort into aiming to please official examination statistics. However I do remember some teachers with affection. I am glad that you liked the story. Mike
