As I approached the chateau I was struck by how much it looked like a fortress. Without my warrant card “mandate de perquisition” I would not have gained access. Chantal looked at me; I knew what she was thinking: we prepared ourselves for what we would find.

The girls had been missing for six years, it was too long. Madams’ eyes locked on mine, power and coldness looked into my soul: I wondered was I fit to judge her?  I had to be or all was lost.

  1. You set up a tense situation, with fascinating hints as to a larger story, but i really like the narrator’s self-analysis at the end. This adds intriguing layers.
